3 OR 4 SECONDS
Remember, in most cases, the observer gets only 3 to 4 seconds to read your message.
Legibility is at the top of the list of important factors in creating a great sign. Color and letter size and style selection are very important in keeping your sign legible.
COLORS
It's pretty obvious, but sometimes this rule is broken. Put light colors on a dark background. In the case of helium inflatables white on red will stand out best. Then dark blue as a background is next. Following are our recommendations.
A white, yellow or multicolored balloon can be most difficult to see in the sky.
Avoid dark colors on dark background and light colors on a light background. Sounds pretty fundamental, but bad contrasting colors are out there all the time.
LETTER STYLE
Keep the letter style basic. Don't get fancy. Remember the passerby has about two, maybe three seconds to read your message. Getting too fancy or too much copy will work against your objective of someone getting your message.
Where this is not true is in a situation where the passerby is walking, and walking within ten to twenty feet of the sign. When they are that close you can go to more copy and get a little fancier. But nonetheless, you will lose effect by getting fancy at any distance.
LETTER SIZE
As a rule of thumb one inch letter tall is good for about ten feet of distance.
In other words, one inch equals ten feet. Ten inches is good for 100 feet. Thirty inches is good for 300 feet. Fifty inches is good for 500 feet. |
